"Service Brake - Visit Workshop" message
I have now got the dreaded warning! I have a W211 52 plate 270 diesel, I have had front discs + Pads replaced ( needed doing anyway) and rear are fine. Message still remains, with regards to the SBC I no longer hear it priming when I open the door / flip remote but it primes when touch brake pedal, does this mean the brake switch is working? that would only leave the SBC unit itself as the culprit, i think? Car still holds on hills etc so suspect unit still has some functionality. Interested in comments especially in repect of Mercedes approach on replacement of this unit foc? Car now has 154k and has not seen a dealership in 3 years as serviced at local garage. Any views welcome. |

My first thought, fwiw, is that this message is nothing to do with SBC. The w211 is clever enough to distinguish between the SBC unit and other brake parts. If the unit was faulty in some way, I would expect the message to clearly identify the SBC system as the culprit.
What is not quite clear from your post: was the message showing before you changed the brakes? The SBC unit on my s211 does not always burp into life every time I open the door, and everything seems to work satisfactorily. I believe (open to correction here) that the SBC pump works on accumulated pressure, therefore you may well not hear the pump going when you unlock, unless the car has been standing for more than a day or so and the pressure has had time to dissipate. I think you need to look at other aspects of the braking system, IMHO. Are the fluid levels OK, for example? Or are the wheel speed sensors' wires connected properly? Edit: Although I think the SBC unit will be found to be serviceable, even if not I think your chances of warranty replacement in your case will be rather unlikely. Although that is not to say you shouldn't try! Last edited by corned; 16-06-2009 at 01:33 PM. Reason: Additional thought |

hi
did you replace the brake wear sensors when you replaced pads? these are close circuit so removing or broken wire will show the same msg. (its a fail safe circuit) good luck Abby |

I just had the same message on my 2003 SL500. It was last serviced at an independent so I took it back there and they told me the SBC pump had reached the maximum number of pedal presses.
I took it to my local MB dealer who confirmed this to be the issue and despite the car being 6 years old, serviced at an independent and bought from and independent the MB dealer carried out £1500 worth of work and replaced the SBC unit FOC. The dealer told me that they 'reset' the pedal count at each service and the independent had failed to do this hence the maximum had been reached!!! Not sure I was totally comfortable with that. |

There is a 10 year warranty with SBC units. Your problem has nothing to do with changing brake pads etc.

Car booked in to Wolverhampton for Wed, spoke to chap from workshop on phone who sounded vague about SBC issues and in particular MB goodwill record on these.
I will let everyone know how it goes.... heres hoping for a favourable result. |

This has just come up on mine, does it come up if the rear pads are low as mine are due to be replaced.

SBC sorted
Hi thought I would post the good news. Car been into dealers and within 30 mins had confirmation that it was the SBC that needed replacing and that Mercedes would pick up the full cost! Job done next day and everything superb.
