Problem connecting iPod Touch to WiFi
I know the WEP key is correct as (a) our Wii uses the wireless connection fine, and (b) two of our friends have recently connected their iPhones successfully here using it. I've tried manually entering the SSID (under "other"), specifically selecting WEP as the security, and then entering the key. Same result. I've tried entering the letters in the WEP key in both upper and lower case. No difference, so stuck to upper case thereafter. No IP address is shown, so I don't believe it's connecting to the router at all. I've Googled this and it seems to be a fairly common problem. Tried reset of network settings, then all settings. No difference. Other suggested solutions include: -turning off wireless security (no thanks) -changing the key on the router (no thanks) -changing the wireless channel on the router (possible, but why?) iPod is running software version 3.1.1 Any advice?? TIA

Does it connect to other wireless networks okay (eg at a friend's place or Wi-Fi hotspot)?
I think you've covered almost everything else ![]() Will |

It's never connected successfully, so the 'forget' option isn't there. But I've reset all network settings, and then all settings on the iPod ... which I think would have wiped out anything anyway.

Were these iPods Xmas presents? You get free phone support for 90days.

You do know that WEP is poor security? Touch support for WEP is buggy and runs slowly.
If it was me I would swap to WPA/WPA2 security - the problem will go away AND your local network will be far more secure.... What make and model router do you have? |

Hi
I struggled linking my Touch up in the summer when I got it - I cannot recall the solution, but it was straightforward AND on the Touch, not the router. Didn't bring it with my whilst here in Devon for New Year, so if no one else posts a solution before Sunday, I will pick it up and see if I can recall what I did to get it on WEP Wifi Fabes |

It's actually running WPA-PSK ![]() The card with the router key printed on it refers to WEP - I completely forgot I changed that when I first installed it. Left the key the same though. So having typed in the SSID as "other" (rather than selecting off the list of networks), picking WPA, then entering the key - it works ![]() So ... the next question is, I know I can 'forget' the network ... which removes the details. But is there an easier way to lock/protect the WiFi access? And/or are there parental controls to limit what they can see in YouTube etc.? |

Nice one....
Have a look through settings/general/restrictions - new with 3.x.x on the Touch....a bit simplistic but might do what you want! |

I found the restrictions stuff which is better than nothing ... have blocked access to YouTube and Safari for a start (the main problems). Will have a play with iTunes to see if that can be set up to request an ID and password every time.
Really I'd like to just lock out all network access with a passcode, but that doesn't seem possible. The 9 year old is into animals/wildlife and got some very interesting results when he recently typed "foxes" into Google Images on the computer ![]() So I've now configured the parental controls that come with Trend Micro Internet Security ... seems to work pretty well. That's the sort of thing that would be handy on the iPod really. |

I hate to think what a search for "into animals and wildlife" would throw up..
![]() The iTunes store is pretty tight via the parental controls and content ratings. You could block the Touch MAC addresses via the router - some routers offer this filtering on a timed basis - to enforce network "lights out". |

MAC address blocking isn't a bad idea, but I can't find that function on this router at all (let alone timed). It's a fairly basic box supplied by O2, don't know who actually makes it.
I did use a MAC list on the Belkin router I had before. |
