External hard drive

I am off to see my brother next weekend and intend to download all his music (about 8000 songs) onto an external hard drive.

The most popular size on e-bay seams to be 500GB. How many songs will this hold?

Cheers

a song can range from 1mb to 5mb, depending on length and MP3 conversion settings.

most of my songs are 3.5mb, i convert in 192k (CD Quality) i have i think between 30,000 and 50,000 or so, and thats approx 465gb. last time i fired up Winamp it said my libruary if played continuous all songs back t oback it would last 37.5 days

i'd be surprised if you get over 100gb.

500gb external is an ok size, but 1tb are really cheap now so i would go for that, as it will be more useful for other stuff

Should hold in excess of 50000 songs and still have a load of room to spare.

Just checked one of my music folders and found just under 4000 songs occupying 22.5GB

Hope that helps.

A high capacity USB stick is another option e.g. 64gb.

Though external hard disk will be faster and not that much more expensive.

A hybrid solution would be an external flash disk drive e.g. 128gb.

The choice between these will depend to an extent on what you intend to do with the device after the current task is completed? A device which will have some future use will make more sense.
