I've thought about that, and think it would be a disaster for sellers. I think many people look at eBay hoping to get tremendous bargains. If auctions were open-ended then there would be none of the current end-of-auction price escalation that goes on now.

what happens if a lot of snipers snipe together? can e bay accept multiple bids at the end? or would you just loose out if your bid was in the queue?
Whichever bidder has the highest bid will win, unless 2 bids are exactly the same bid or there is not enough of a difference between them to meet eBay's minimum bid increment (I do not think you can overload eBay's proxy bidding system). In this case, the first bid in wins.

For example, your bid of $50 is registered with eBay when there's 10 seconds left in the auction. A competitor's bid of $50.99 is attempted when there is five seconds left in the auction. You win because the minimum bid increment of $1 wasn't met by the other bid. If they bid one more cent - $50 or more, they would have won.

Here are some links to the eBay page is showing bid increments:

"I've bought a fair bit of stuff on eBay and only ever bid now by sniping (manually) at the end of the auction. I've tried various ways and I'm convinced that if you bid early it simpy encourages other people to bid. I used to think that maybe if you got in early it would put others off, but it has the opposite effect."

I agree. And just put in your maximum bid and relax for the last few seconds. If you lose it, you weren't going to pay any more anyway, were you?
