Ignominious End to a distinguished service record

Slightly sad end for a warship with a distinguished service record. First saw action in the Falklands war and now on her last voyage to be scrapped in a Turkish Yard . HMS Illustrious a light aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy and the second of three Invincible-class ships constructed in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Now we wait a year for HMS QE to be commissioned - and another 3 years before we have aircraft that can use her. Daft or what!!

Shame. It could have been turned into a museum like HMS Belfast

HMS Illustrious did not see action in the Falklands conflict. She arrived on task in Falklands waters some 6 days after the Argentine surrender and cessation of hostilities.

There was much talk of this but sadly not economically viable.

Back in the day the Invincible class felt like a step backwards after the last 'proper' HMS Ark Royal retired in 1979 - and HMS Eagle retired some years before that.

The Falklands conflict demonstrated that if you have enought decent hulls then even if not the ones you'd really want - then with the right attitude and competence then you can work round and adapt what you have to circumstances.

The QE class will probably work out too - eventually. There will be lots of ups and even more downs from the media along with opportunistic polirtical disparagement as they come into service but the Royal Navy will do its thing and will get them working.
