I did do in my teens.
Four fights, won three and disqualified from the last. The first three were easy, my fourth opponent was quite the opposite. I discovered in that fight that in boxing you have to take punches as well as give them, something my temperament at the time didn't quite understand... Never been in a ring since, still follow boxing in a big way though. |

Tried a bit. Good for fitness. My build wasn't conducive to sparring or competing though. I have pretty short arms and my main sports career has been a reasonably level of rugby, so I was pretty heavy with short arms. Not a good combo!

Did a spot of white collar boxing in the late 90's.
Since then, ring replaced with a cage. |

My bro boxed for over 15 years in the Amateurs. He's now a pro trainer. It's a tough old game

The reason I asked is I've been using my local-ish boxing gym for the last 3 or so years for fitness - mainly circuit training 2/3 times a week with the occassional bit of light sparring (again more for the fitness of moving round the ring with someone).
Anyway around 2 months ago a charity night was mentioned for members of our club to box each other, sell tickets and raise money for our gym. I put my name in the hat and at the ripe old age of 33 1/2 I'll be stepping into the ring for the first ever time on Friday 20th. My wife thinks I'm crazy.

I don't box, but do compete in ameture kick boxing bouts. and personally it's great, it's not all about who's the hardest or who got the best knock out, it also a show of skill, technical ability and discipline. Most of the opponents I have fought iv shared a drink with afterwords |

The lad I'm fighting seems like a nice enough bloke. I haven't tried to get to know him too well, but like you say - I'll be more than happy to have a pint with him afterwards.

Well - i fought on Saturday night and unfortunately lost. Turns out the lad I was fighting was a bit of a ****: he somehow mnaged to knee me in the balls in the first round and then stuck a head butt on me after the bell at the end of the second. No points deductions and no reprimands from the ref. He won the first, I won the second so it all came down to how the ref scored the third. My corner, mates and a lot of random strangers I met in the crowd afterwards thought it was mine, but he got his hand raised.
What a rush the ring walk was though - it was probably my favourite part! Unfortunately my face is a bit marked up and my left eye is quite badly bruised from the head butt. I am now officially retired from competing in the ring. The training, actual fight and now my face all hurt too much!

Oh and to be fair to him he did come and find me after the fight (and after puking his guts up outside) and apologise - saying that he didn't know what had happened to him. I let him buy me a beer.
