Well, if you don't have tax the offence is using an untaxed vehicle. Failing to disply as well would be a bit pedantic but would normally apply if you had tax but didn't put it in the window. Since the system of chcecking became electronic I don't think people get done for that on its own these days.

Does the car have June's tax disc on it? If so, then the chances of being picked up are remote in the extreme. If there's a gap in the tax then that opens another can of worms unless your SORN'd the car.

Ah. Well you can't use the "oops, I forgot the retax it, Officer" excuse then.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's another offence to use a SORN'd car! The only way of unSORNing it is to tax it.

By now the DVLA database may have caught up so that you could buy the RFL on line, if you can then there will be a receipt for purchase so in the highly unlikely event of a stop then the only technical "offense" is failure to display but if you buy it today before the end of the month there is now a period of grace of, I believe 5 days in which you will not be prosecuted as the disc is awaiting delivery.

I don't think it applies if the car's coming off SORN.

God Dammit. So all yesterday DVLA web site is down for "essential maintenance". Today hurrah. It's up, it flies. However it still says my car is Not insured so can't be taxed. Called AON who say "it is insured". They have now sent me the docs and told me me (as mentioned earlier by another poster) "print these out in color and take them to the Post Office".

So why do we bother? What is the point? I have now lost 4 days insurance premiums, rushed through an MOT, took time off work all to end up stood in the queue at the Post Office. What a blindingly good system this is.

Tip: Want Tax. print your own docs and go down the Post Office. Do not attempt to to do the right thing.

Bruce you must have a really picky post office to not accept your copies as proof . I had to tax mine on saturday and went to the local main post office where there was a queue of about 20 people all with thier renewals in hand. They had a guy going through the queue and checking the regs and expiry of insurance and mot and then signing the reminder so that when it was my turn at the window it was just a matter of handing over the renewal reminder. By the way my insurance cert is a printed off one and wasnt mentioned at all.

Well finally late yesterday my Insurance company emailed me a PDF (MS encrypted and password protected) copy of Insurance Certificate. This WAS accepted by another Post Office and the car was taxed. Not bad only four days to tax a car.

The MID takes quite some time to update. Had a similar situation trying to tax a friends car (also SORN'd). As you've found an email of the Insurance Certificate is acceptable (the rules were changed to allow this) however it HAS to be a Certificate of Insurance not a cover note / confirmation of renewal etc.

My insurance certificate was provided to me as a PDF to print myself.

No hard copy. The print out is accepted by the post office too.

Equally, the new style MOT certificates are just plain white paper that you could print yourself - no security from forgery whatsoever.

The point being that you can now simply make your own MOT cert and Insurance cert on your home inkjet, pop down to the post office and get a tax disk without actually having either.

Anyone would think that the govenment care not whether you really have insurance or a roadworthy vehicle. All they seem to be interested in is making it easy to tax your vehicle and generate more revenue.

Oh. My car is still showing as not insured on the NIB. My insurers AON did rather kindly re-start my policy for me from yesterday as I had a moan about not being able to use the car. FYI. They state that the NIB should update with 24 hours Mon-Sat.

It just makes rather a mockery of having an on-line system and all the ANPR technology if it all fails at the first hurdle when all you are doing is the honest thing.

I've never had such an issue as always use a decent nearby broker. Docs issued at point of sale, or emailed if preferred, and you can always pop down and yell at the staff if you like, when things don't go right.

(Well that's what I do. They are my staff after all )
