top flight Football now is a sanitised americanised load of bollacks with over paid over protected and pampered players.
football is still the national sport and keeps 100.000 of kids fit and interested in sport so please less of the snobbery on here but what what is the point of the BBC now, I think they get a total of 3 hours max a week viewing from my household. Even Chanel 4 makes a better effort with racing and documentaries. I want my money back. |

Whilst I agree it was a very poor choice of a game I'd much prefer that to watching hours of Come Dancing or Z listers skating on ice that the Beeb try to chuck down our throats at every given opportunity at prime time TV.

In South Wales there are more soccer players than Rugby, more fans too if you compare crowds at Swansea's Liberty Stadium yesterday with even the very best supported Heineken Cup games. If we were to be completely honest all the other sports are just there for the saddo's, bean poles and fat boys that aren't skilled enough to play football

Well, it wasn't really, nor was it intended to be pro or anti soccer.
It was just that a second division football match with a very easily predictable result shown live on the BBC's flagship channel between 5 and 7 on a bank holiday seemed totally inapproriate. I can just imagine the programme planners getting their heads together and saying, "What shall we show on Good Friday", and some bright spark saying, "How about Barnsley v West Ham?" And some how, everyone agreed By the way, did you notice that half the seats in the ground were empty - says a lot about the interest in the game...! |

And some how, everyone agreed Mercy1, would you consider yourself a Football fan? The only reason I ask is that surely Xmas and Easter are about two things firstly Religion and then sport with Football the clear favourite. With Sky having the vast majority of Premiership games covered the Beeb can only really look at the Championship and below and it would have probably made a welcome break for many viewers who are unable or choose not to have Sky to be able to view a match with a team fighting for Premiership football next season. The Beeb is however a doomed institution in its current format, as bandwidth and storage get faster and cheaper "anytime" tv will be the future where you choose what you watch at any given time. In fact in our household that is already the case and the few things that we watch on live tv are sport related the rest we record and watch at our leisure and choose from a library either through the options given or from our own family library of films and tv series we have purchased online.

Mercy1, would you consider yourself a Football fan? [/QUOTE] Yes, I enjoy football, but that is not my point... My point is that in the overall scheme of programme planning for the general public (of which there are millions who have no interest in football whatsoever), why would the BBC want to show a second division game live on their flagship channel for two and a half hours? I would guess that most football fans (except perhaps for those in Barnsley, West Ham or the really dedicated enthusiasts) would be hard-pressed to bother watching. Not many people in Barnsley were even moved (judging by the number of empty seats in the ground). IMHO, it's pointless the BBC saying that because they can't show the top games, they'll show games of no general interest! Best to look elsewhere, I would say. ![]() (Looks like this thread is heading for the bin, with some of the comments. Predictable, I suppose, but a shame, as it was more a punt at the BBC than football - can't it be kept that way?) |
