MOT SRS Light Failure/Pass?

I was looking up SRS light via google and came across a forum thread where people said they contacted VOSA and it was confirmed that by removing the SRS bulb light it can pass the MOT, but having the light come on during an MOT is a failure.

It makes no sense but I have pasted the link below.

Late model E36 noob caught out by airbag light on mot.

Any thoughts as I would have thought that no light at all means the whole SRS system has failed and therefor resulting in a fail.

I thought that it would fail if it didn't come on with the other warning lamps and then go out once the engine was started.

As above, it must illuminate when IGN switched on then extinguish

Not true...

This is weird but... if your ABS light doesn't come on during the startup sequence you fail the MOT. If you have no SRS bulb, no fail because rules are different.

I don't know what this motuk website is linked to above, but it is but it's wrong.

My 124 had no SRS light and passed several MOTs over a number of years before I noticed and asked an indie to investigate. The problem wasn't easy to fix so we looked into possibly not fixing it. Happily I did manage to get it fixed.

ABS
MOT testing manuals and guides
"If the vehicle is fitted with an ABS and/or ESC system, check that the relevant warning lamp(s): a. is fitted b. illuminates c. does not indicate a fault "

SRS
MOT testing manuals and guides
"Check that the Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) does not indicate a fault in the system."

From their home page

"MOT TESTING UK - leading the way in MOT testing
This website was created to give information on all aspects of MOT testing. It has been designed to meet the needs of the general public and the motor vehicle industry."

And here http://www.motuk.co.uk/manuals.htm

Check the link in my post above, section 5.4 - reasons to fail #2

"A Supplementary Restraint System (SRS) malfunction indicator lamp:

. inoperative

. indicating a system malfunction."

Hi Whitenemisis,

I saw your link, but I don't think it's right. My links come from the government transport office, I looked into this extensively when my car had this problem. I wasn't too happy driving my family round in a car that had defective safety systems and also concerned that it couldn't be sold on/in good concience.

The link you posted is from motuk dot co dot uk, which belongs to Ian Parrott of Hare Hatch, Berkshire - not the government.

Either way - I would imagine this is a loop hole that will be closed at some point.

Thanks,

Dave

So effectively only tested for pass or fail from April 2013.

Guys I just passed my MOT testers so can confirm that:

- ABS Lamp must come on and then extinguish
- SRS lamp only fails if its illuminated.. if its not present or working its NOT a failure.
