£8000-£9000 maybe off the top of my head.

Don't buy a 2005 V6CDi. It will cost you a fortune in repairs as a lot of upgrades to manifolds/turbo seals etc came out later. Warranty plus my costs for repairs to the engine are over £2500.

Buy a later car, or hold out for a CLS320cdi thats a newer age, or get a CLK500/CLS500

even with all the options?

OK now talk to me about the engine - in detail!

how do you know if it has the later / newer engine?

It's the 642 engine with the 7G box...

In my experience lots of optional extras make a car easier to sell although they don't make much difference to a used car price.

It's up for 7,000 I have got him to 6,750 MOT till march and tax till december. I'll try for 6.5

Now it does need tyres and brakes alll round. according to the advisory on the MOT and it says NS Coil spring has corrosion..

So whats the value and how do I know what engine is the good one and what one is the bad one?

Is it overall forum opinion that the 2005 V6 is bad or just a few lemons out there?

I'd just not ever go with the 1st run of a new engine and transmission, as my threads have bourne out.

Coil spring has corrosion, easily fixed and I'd suggest a non OEM set up. For £7k if you get it for £6500 it may be ok and you can put aside a bit for repairs, which is a good thing as its milliage puts it dead in the valvebody failure zone and thats a mere snip at £1000 if that goes.

st4! your shed is putting me off LOL!!

I don't want the 220 as I do not want to lose the power and I HAVE to buy a car with Xenon's, Heated & Mem seats, plus this has command and Keyless Go.

What do I look out for and whats best to check?

Has anyone got positive things to say about the 2005 V6 Engine,

Where is Olly when you need him?!

Whats wrong with a CLK320 petrol with these things, or a V8 one. You don't cover the miles to warrant a diesel.

If I recall, Jay (jaymanek) is a big fan of the V6 CDI and 7G. He'll give you a better perspective on it.

Personally, I've had two issues with my CLS V6 CDI engine, both sorted under warranty. But I wouldn't touch another pre-'08 V6 again. In fact I'm most likely to drop down to a 4 pot next time (250 CDI?).

Was it your manifold at fault Barry?

Don't get me wrong, when the engine is not packing in, its the best blend of performance and economy on the market, and if you sort the 7g it can be tolerable and pleasant but its a complex set up.

Yup! That's manifold and bearing. What's next?

I must get a warranty when this one expires. there's NO WAY I'm running this car without one. It would break me I think. The last repair was £1200!

I reckon I'll only keep it a few more months anyway as I don't trust it any more, sadly. Bring on the E250cdi Coupe! (or maybe even a very late CLK220 to be going on with...)

Just the IPS motor left to go, and the 7g valve block, both of which are highly probably events. Its still in warranty so pray they let go and then that is that. The bearing is the rare one.

If you get the leaking turbo seal (they all do that sir) cleaned up and changed, you will delay the onset of further issues. Or perform the 4.7kohm resistor shunt which purports to disable the EGR and the swirl mechanism. Your car will pollute more but not terribly so....

I guessed it would be a sticking manifolds when you posted the issues you had....

The issue is the smoothness, power and refinement of the engine lure you in for more punishment, but Mercedes do make better lumps for reliability.

What about a full phat CLS 55/63 AMG? In saying that, the E coupe is a fabulous car.

Don't leave the CLS fold!

Actually the clincher when I decided to buy mine was it was parked next to a new white E coupe (in itself a lovely looking car) in the car park at the MB dealer. The CLS seemed to dwarf the E coupe, looked substantially bigger and also prettier (all IMHO of course). A quick wiki lookup out of interest now reveals the CLS is 21cm longer than the E Coupe and 10cm wider. In fact it's only 9cm off the length of a SWB 221 S class.

I guess peace of mind would be better if you've had a couple of issues with yours though.

Back to the OP, the car looks pretty good value providing it doesn't suffer from those expensive engine issues. Might be worth checking the service history to see what has already been done? Either that or go for the petrol version if the numbers stack up depending on your usage.

That's the problem! The CLS is so darned seductive!

But I do like the E Coupe and would probably prefer the smaller size anyway. The (hopeful) dependability and robustness of the 4 pot diesel appeals as well.

There again, a late model CLK500 could be fun... OP!! Are you reading this?!!
