An Audi TT'd turbo engine Mk1 Golf would pretty much destroy anything in a straight line and bends come to think of it.

Without knowing the true spec of the other car involved this story is pointless.

Yes, I remember being in a Mark 1 1600 Gti in 1976...that was fast (relative to an R12ts). We forget how much power all cars have now even compared to 15 years ago.
My GTI Ed 30 is running 380 bhp. Just shows how engines have come on and can be uprated.

I cursed it and said to my mate that's my run ruined. It accerated briskly, I was in kickdown and it was getting away. The road gets quite twisty and there was a tight bend. I tried to take this at the same speed as him, bad idea, lots if tyre screeching. I then tried again to follow and really taking the bends as fast as could push the car. It got ahead. His car was more capable than mine on that sort of road and/or he had the skill to drive it faster than I could.

I saw one of those pesky sport swifts in the shed and had a spirited pursuit. I couldn't catch it but it didn't lose me either as we charged round roundabouts and onto the DcW it had enough poke not to shame itself. I suspect it was modified as on paper I should have caught it on the straight DCW
There's a reason why the Nurburgring uses them as rental racers, which you have discovered!

These cars (ASTRA VXR) have 240bhp as standard but a simple ECU remap could take them to 290-300bhp, which will beat the older engine CLS500 as it's lighter... once it gets the power down.

I remember back in the 1960's the favourite tweak was a Cortina GT engine in an Anglia 105E they were brisk for the time.

What I love about my car is that I know it is faster than most other cars, drag speed or through corners, it's ridiculously quick, but I don't generally go fast at all, I tootle around. Just knowing I can release thunder is a good feeling.

I love seeing 'fast cars' going slowly, there's a certain majesty seeing an M5 or CL63 cruising in lane one of the motorway.

The chap should have bought the later model, but it sounds like his car needs a service or something.
I agree totally... I have an S500 and it is a great cruiser, has the power if you really need it, but it's done 180k miles and i would like it to do at least another 100k...
