Correct spec of oil

Can anyone confirm the correct spec of oil that I should be using in my engine? Looking at my service record, MB have used a mixture of 10w40 and 5w30. During my ownership, I have had it serviced three times by three different indys. First used 10w40, second 5w30 and most recent 0w40.

A bit of googling about these oils and the difference between them has left me none the wiser. Can anyone here explain, in layman's terms, the difference between these oils and which is the correct one that should be used in a pre-facelift E220CDI. Cheers!

Those are viscosity ratings and are not as important as the MB spec. As per your handbook, you should use MB 229.3 or 229.5 specced oils, unless you have a DPF (you don't) in which case you need 229.31 or 229.51.

I've recently seen a service book from a main dealer for a 2012 Vito where they had put in plain old 10w40 (no low ash oil for DPF's) and specified such in the service book.

So much for main dealer peace of mind servicing. I wonder whether the engine or DPF will fail first.
