Fuel accumulator ( beside the fuel pump and filter under the car below the rear drivers' side seat ) ?

Just coming to this thread , I would be inclined to suspect either a faulty starter motor , poor earth return ( either between the starter itself and the engine block , or between the engine/gearbox assembly and the bodywork ) or a fault in the starter circuit ( hence the test proceedure Olly mentioned earlier - bridging the positive terminal to the purple wire to see if the starter operates ) .

This is difficult to diagnose at a distance ( sorry , I am in Scotland ) so if the above does not help you need to find someone competent near you . Anyone who knows what they are doing should be able to sort this for you .

replacing the starter motor is not easy or cheap on a class.
see this thread
Replacing the starter motor without dropping the engine - Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum

I would still try the purple wire test first.

So what is it? If its an engine out job it would take longer than 4hours wouldnt it? (desperately hoping that it doesnt).
