W219 320CDi - need turbo.
I know I need different turbo. Question: Used, new or rebuild? And if so what way and cost? What model is it? What code? Is there a rebuild kit for it? |

Black smoke is not the reason to change a turbo.

Olly... turbo was diagnosed by friends who is a mechanic al his life. He checked my engine over while oil change and noticed oil all over turbo. It was cleaned not long time ago. I did it about 4-6 weeks ago. What would indicate turbo failure or getting close to it? As I been told its not gone but it might go soon.
Can you tell me what should be boost pressure? On this engine? I had it tested and I would like to know what should I expect? At the same time it feels as I got quite big boost lag comprering to friend`s 320CDI. When I stomp on gas pedel on his it goes almost instantly. On mine it alwasys takes longer before turbo kicks in. Part no is: A613 096 00 99 (or A613 096 01 99)

Turbo failure is normally diagnosed by wear in the bearing shaft. A small amout of play is ok but if you have loads of play then the bearings are worn. If this is the case there is excess blue smoke from the exhaust pipe.
If there is oil all over the turbo it could just be the oil feed pipe leaking. I have no idea what the boost pressure should be. I normally use WIS to find this info out. I have not got it to hand at the moment. I think it is measured in KPa's. I would test it on the Star. The lag could be due to other issues such as blocked cats. Is the air mass sensor new? The reason why I am questioning the diagnosis is that these thurbo's on the 210's are very reliable. |

Air mass is brand new. (2 months old) as I bought it when I got car. Month ago I removed intake pipe and I couldnt feel any play on turbo shaft.
What sort of failure could cause feed pipe problem? Gasket? I have to check WIS for that info. Would vacuum converters cause any power lag problems like mine? It has power and there is no problems with boost but that lag?

There are copper seals on the feed pipe. Just like a sump bung.
If there is no play in the shaft and it spins freely then the turbo bearings will probably be ok. |

Copper crush washer on turbo feed banjo - once they've been removed once then the washer should be replaced as they don't always seal properly.
If your turbo is shagged then you'll hear it whistling and whining like a goodun before the bearings go completely. If you need rebuild, then I can recommend ITS Turbos - I've used them few times in the past for various turbos and they've been brilliant. Turbo comes back good as new. Their contact details are on ITS Turbos - they still haven't got a full web site up, and first time I used them was years ago! |

I remember when I checked turbo it spined OK and no rubbing or scraping on a wall. It was all fine.
I checked WIS and I cant find any info about boost pressure figures. I will change those feed pipe washers soon anyway. |

Black smoke does not mean duff turbo. As mentioned above it would be a vac leak or injectors. Oil around the turbo housing does not mean duff turbo, it means you have a leak from one of the oil feeds at the sump end or turbo end. Hissing noise indicates split in intercooler hose.
Oil does not burn black, fact, when turbo bearings go you get blue smoke on spool up or over run, fact. |

Injectors are fine. Where is vac involved on this engine?
In what way boost leak would effect it? Does anyone know boost figures? Seems as mine only goes to ~3.3 and 3.8 max when its in high rpm and full range boost. Friends 320CDI get to to about 6. Is that in PSI? Last edited by allias; 12-12-2010 at 09:06 AM. |
