instrument panel lighting

I have recently bben given a 1984 Ce230 (W123). The main instrument panel lighting does not work. I have checked the appropriate fuse and this is O.K. Does anyone have any tips as to how this is fixable?

Is there a dimmer knob anywhere on the instrument cluster that you can turn left or right, the lights brightness might be turned down to off.

apparently a common problem. had the same issues myself. Hopefully all that's needed is to fiddle with the dimmer switch which is the same knob as the trip mileometer on the speedo. Its points tend to corrode after a long time with little use so just turning it left and right should get you some light eventually. If that fails which hopefully it won't then a new rheostat may be needed. good luck
