We've argued this before but I haven't seen any satnav that would have free map updates (excluding perhaps a limited period, paid with the purchase).

Nokia maps on a phone would have free map updates, all over the world but I don't consider even that free because in their case you have to pay for the navigation licence.

But it is true that one can get a simple TomTom device including maps with the price of an MB map update. Perhaps MB assumes that each buyer anyway shares the DVD with a couple of others. This is why I would prefer the "locked" solution. It would still not be equally cheap as for those devices that sell a lot more.

The Milton Keynes shop website reckons that part no was available from April 2008, so you would hope that a MY09 car has that version in it, but my COMAND reports back a map data version of Q4 2007, so who knows.

I am hesitant to buy that version as the dealer states no later version is currently available.

I suspect Alfie may be able to comment further once he gets some discs.

(couldn't see your link as it requires registration or something).

Any news on the update disc. Also, how do you find out if you already have the most up to date version?

It is called the engeneers menu and you can see all the info about your navi and sound system, but be carefull...do not change something if you have no idea what it is...from that menu you can also update software but you will need cd with updates first And just to say that you can buy cheap 30$ camera, upgrade it in the trunk and turn it on in that menu...just wire it first,it will start every time you put in reverse (If you don't already have rev cam...) I'm a little off-topic here... bye

One tiny point never usually mentioned is that COMAND has free TMC so you get the ability to have dynamic en-route updates to automatically give you a new route to avoid hold-ups. I think updates are every 3 minutes.
As far as I know, with all other SATNAV systems its an option you have to pay for.
I think TOM-TOM charge in the region of £70 a year for this feature.

But I might be wrong.

Apples and pears I'm afraid.

The Merc free TMC is the same as the subscription free TMC that pretty much all the non-integrated machines have as a pay-for-the-receiver-when-you-buy-the-box option.

The Tom-Tom subscription version uses a different data source and is a lot more accurate (based on my experience running both in the same car).

Both are still miles away from being 100% reliable, accurate and up to date.....

The update disks are ridiculously expensive so we have decided not to stock them - sorry.

Garmin are now offering updates for life for a fee of £99.99, seeing as each yearly update is £60 its very good value for money and a lot cheaper than the command updates.

Now Navigon offer a european based app for the iphoine 3g and 3g3 that costs £80 or £53 for the UK only.

so have to wait and see how much the map updates are. but it does offer lane assist and 3d motorway views and real sign posts. they have beaten tomtom to the app store by months.
