Electronic key
Any suggestions why this is, or fix for the "spare"?

The unlocking it RF, the DAS is IR and takes power from the ignition lock. Check the coil inside the key for dry joints/breaks and try pointing the key at a digital camera and watch the viewfinder for light when the buttons are pressed.
If the LED flashes when the buttons are presed then the LED and key are Ok, just the inductive coil is duff/has a bad connection. key test. Last edited by Dieselman; 13-02-2009 at 07:11 PM. |

Same happend to me when I picked mine up - rang striaght back and said second key didn't work, the garage sorted it (sent me to local MB dealership to get a new key at their expense - I don't think they realised how much they cost/thought it would be a simple coding thing).
Camera trick showed the dud key was working but still wouldn't start the car. |

just tried the key through the camera and it appears ok, I`ll take a look at the coil but I`m sure I read somewhere it was a bit of a bugger to open!!

Got the battery out, something rattled and out fell a small casement with a tiny coil,
so I guess thats my problem a detached coil, any suggestions?

Unfortunately a 210 mile round trip for a key isn`t an option. As it was a high volume, quick profit dealer, they are not going to be interested.
Some blame will lie at my door as I was so intent on making sure that the corrosion problems were at the minimum[small 5p size on corner of bonnet, that seems to be all] that I even missed the two slicks on the back and had to replace them this morning. Well I`ve just had a go at soldering the component [I would have said coil but you guys are having too much fun at my expense ] back on, but what a nightmare! Even with a magnifyer these things are so small and the soldering iron is so big, anyway first attempt has left me with it still not working in the ignition but still locking/unlocking the car, I will have another go when my eyesight gets back to normal. By the way is there any photos of the circuit board, the only ones I seen so far just show it from the button side. Thanks for your input guys. |

The garage not interested? What's that all about?
They have a legal duty of care and if they delivered a duff key they have to sort it out.Anyway, having had a go at it with a soldering iron probably has sunk that opportunity well and truly. Are you used to soldering fragile circuits like this? It's very easy to overheat the board and bugger it that way.

The new chrome keys are great, i ended up with 2 as my first one got a split after 3 weeks - merc supplied a replacement and never took the old one!!! only thing is no trade discount on keys |
