Comand unit removal, unusual problem!

Hi all, just bought a replacement comand unit for my E55 (W210), I have the correct removal keys, however, when I insert them into the slots they do not locate into anything. I have tried the same keys in the AC control panel above and they work fine, heard them click into place and pulled the unit straight out. Any ideas as to what is wrong or how to remove the unit?

Thanks.

You have to take the wood panel off, it comes off from the bottom after you remove the screws. I think the screws are visible above the ashtray - but its been a very long time.

Thanks for that. So the keys are not used then? Why do they have the slots in the unit?

Theres 2 screws that hold the unit in once you removed the wood panel.

The front is same as the W163 ML and the W208 CLK where the keys are used
