W203 auto dimming mirror

Hi to all,

this is my first visit to the forum. Have read some good stuff here and hope you can help:

I recently had the driver's door mirror glass of my c220 sportcoupé broken, and removed it to get the part number off the back. once removed I realised that it should have been an auto dimming mirror, but at some point had been replaced with a standard heated mirror.
(now I know why the heating element never worked)

I found a used original mercedes auto dimming mirror on ebay, and when connected it went instantly dark, and has never cleared, even after disconnecting completely.

I've measured the voltage across the plug coming out of the mirror assembly and it is constantly >12v with the ignition on, even when I trigger the light sensor on the interior rear view mirror.

Has any one any experience of this?

It looks to me like I've got a fault in the wiring/control unit, and this may have damaged the auto dimming mirror I connected?

I've searched in vain for a schematic of the system.

Any advice/ideas appreciated.
