W124 Speakers

Hi all,

I want to replace the rear speakers in my CE300 as they are blown. I want to buy a good pair that will fit in the original holes.

Does anyone know the right size to buy? Or even the best speaker of choice?

Also, I've found a guy in the US that sells doorcards with speaker builds already in them for the W124 but does anyone know a company in the UK can provide this?

Thanks all.

You may find that speakers are available from the dealer. Dash ones are still available

If you want door builds you can buy them from Jehnert in Germany

Or you can build your own

I had mine made, the cost was £450 for the pair and the tweeter pods. I now have a 3 way front end setup, housing focal utopia speakers and the sound is exceptional.

I will be changing them in the near future, so they may come up for sale.

Thanks guys, I really wanted to upgrade the speakers though from the original back ones so needed to know the size.

Aka$h - I'm really interested if you're selling them mate - when do you think you'd be looking at getting rid of them?

Bear in mind that two pairs of small, tinny speakers is often worse than one pair of small, tinny speakers. This is particularly true in W124s

I'd ditch the rears entirely and install one good pair up front - a bit like Aka$h has done...

To be honest, I quite fancy having a go at building my own door builds but I've never done it before and it's got to be oem looking like aka$h's. I'd love to know how to do it tho with fibreglass and mdf etc. It would be awesome - does anyone know of a course I could go on or a good website? might have a go...

if i remember correctly i used 5 1/4" in the rears they fit into the orignal place. Phoenix gold Tantrums coaxials connected to an amp got the same speakers up front but 5 1/4" componets with the tweeters mounted nicely in the door.

It is actually pretty simple to do, especially with this doorcard.
Its the trimming yourself that i would find hard.

The bottom half of the doorcard comes away from the rest of the doorcard which makes things a lot easier.
You then get a baffle made for the speaker, position it where you would like and make sure that its out enough to fit the speaker in but not soo much that it looks out of place.
You then get an old tshirt, wrap it round the baffle and the card, staple it at the back of the card so its tight, and then soak it in resin mixed with hardener.
After a coating of this it should be hard, but you can layer more resin and hardener to make it a bit stronger. Also, adding fibreglass matting and then using more resin and hardener will make it even more rock solid.

All of the above is easy, this is the slightly hard part.
The surface of your end product will be rough, which will mean you will have to use filler to make it smooth, and keep sanding and fillering etc. until you have something that is ready to trim!

Now attatch the bottom half of the door card back to the top again and it should look pretty good.

Alot of people also add one or two bolts in the newly made lower part, just inside where the speaker goes for extra strength.

You can also cut a hole out the back of the build you have just made, a circle behind the speaker will do, if you would like to vent them into the doors.

Hope that helps and if you need anymore help, just let me know!
Will be doing my own as soon as i can find some donor door cards.

EDIT: Also, check out this link and this website for the builds:

http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/vbb/showthread.php?t=123910 - That is pretty much what you need to do.
http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/vbb/showthread.php?t=73733

Should give you an idea of what i just explained.

Excellent, thanks mate I've seen the t-shirt stretching trick on telly once I think. I might just give it a go as I've always wanted to do it! Thanks for your help. I'll be in touch when I get stuck - lol.
