Battery replacement?

Yesterday morning when starting the ML270 (between the first click of the key and before turning the engine over) there was a warning on Comand that there was insufficient power to start Comand.
Immedialely after the engine started Comand sprung into life.

I have been leaving the lights on auto and lately the lights have been on a lot (grey days ). Also the heated seats have been in use.

The car is 2003 and has done about 40K. My guess that the battery is not in the best of health.

Is there anything that can be done to boost/prolong the life of the battery or have I got to fork out for a new one?

Hi

You could check it for water, might be low. If it is not just phone your local Mercedes Commercial Dept and ask them for a battery for a Sprinter 313 part no A005 541 21 01/28 expect to pay £60-£70.

Probably a bit of a silly question (as no doubt it is the same battery but at a cheaper price) but I'll ask anyway- why for a Sprinter 313?

Thanks, I'll check the water level first.
I remember when I was a lad (25 - 30 years ago) you could buy some white tablets to put in the battery cells to improve it. Is there anything like this around now?

Your battery is probably the original i.e. 5 years old -buy a new one. Get a commercial MB one (cheaper) or Varta/Bosch and it will last almost as long again.

Thise tablets (Bat-aid) never realy worked.
Best to check the state of charge with a hydrometer (if you can get to the electrolyte) and if it is fully charged, get a high rate discharge test done at an auto-electrician.
That's really the best thing to do without wspending money 'just in case'
