Car wont start

Hi,
I have just had to leave my car (E220cdi year 2000, manual) in a car park as the key is not being accepted/recognised by the ignition barrell.
Central locking is OK which makes me think it must be the barrell itself.
Have fiddled with it for 40 mins but no joy.
Is there anything that needs to be re set at all or does the barrell have to be replaced?

Thanks

Try the spare key frst.

I suspect the ignition switch is faulty. Expect not much chage from £600 fitted.

You don't mention but I guess you tried your other key? I guess you could try to clean the IR eye at the bottom but unfortunately there are other owners who have had to replace the EIS unit.

Unfortunatly I dont have a spare key.
Can I remove the EIS or will the car need to be transported to the dealership?

A specialist/independent with a Star can do it for you. They will need the whole car.

You won't be able to start the car by removing the EIS, but might be able to get the steering lock deactivated so the car could be towed.

If he is handy, he could try to open the key and see if the coil soldering has failed. But since it anyway needs at least one new key (I cannot see how one could live with one key only), I would order a new key anyway.

Likewise, you need a spare key and that would be the cheapest item if it is only a key failure. The batteries in the key afaik only operate the door locks and do nothing for the key/barrel recognition.

Managed to get car started & back home.
Have checked for loose connections on EIS (wishful thinking) but will now take key apart and check soldering, as well as order a spare one.

Many thanks for everyones help & advise.

Had the key apart & found more crap in it than my wifes handbag.
A bit of delicate cleaning with cotton buds and all working fine again.
Neddless to say I will still be getting a spare this week.
Thanks all.
