W124 - number plate lights earth

my number plate lights dont work and before i get pulled and get a producer i better fix them.

the bulb is fine as is the power, switch and fuse. However it doesnt have the permenant earth it should do. i have followed the earth wire out of boot and i disapears behind the rear seats. Where should it go? could i just earth is at a suitable location rather than chasing it round the car?

Does the light in the boot come on? If not then it might be that the wires are freyed from opening and closing the boot and hence need soldering together. My car failed its MOT because of this and I was guided by a fellow member to the problem which was a straightforward fix.

Sounds like my issue, what you need to do is trip off the cable protector and find where the earth is broken. With mine I found it was (weirdly) at the point after it leaves the boot hinge under the rear shelf. Find the break, insert a bullet /crimped type connecter and shuld be good to go.
