Parking Sensor Failure

After picking up my car from the body shop, when the installed a new bumper after my Waitrose knock, the parking sensors started behaving erratically, both red lights only coming on when I pulled away from rest. This was only intermittent and, when MB had it in to look at it, couldn't replicate the fault. All tests on the sensors showed them to be functioning normally.

Now, after a week of this intermittent behaviour, they've packed up completely, switching themselves off as shown by the light on the switch on the dashboard. Attempts to turn them back on from this switch just makes them beep loudly, turn both red lights on and turn themselves off again.

Has anyone else experienced this? I suspect a bad connection somewhere, are there any likely points?

I suspect one or more of the sensors have failed. This can be checked on a Star machine.

I had this symptom and the cause was one failed rear sensor

That's what MB spent half a day doing. All sensors were allegedly OK. I suppose the one that took the knock may have been damaged and operating intermittently and has now failed. I hope that's all it is.

If they used the old ones they may have too much paint on making them think that there is an obstacle there..

I had sensors acting erratically for a while after having a car valeted ... I suspect they'd used a jet wash and the sensors suffered some water ingress. They sorted themselves out though.

Thanks everyone. As the sensors were working fine even after the knock this must be down to the repair work. I'm placing it in M-B Accident Management's hads. The extra hassle is annoying though, especially as it was showing up, albeit intermittently, when I picked it up.

This is really getting annoying. Today the Parking Sensors started working again. Now they're back to failing inermittently. MB haven't phoned me back to book it in but I don't want to go through another round of them not being able to find the fault. What can I do?

I would book it in and ... get a video clip replicating the problem, so I can show it to them, In case it does not replicate when you have it there ;-)
