take 12V from light and install a switch in between.
but don't know if it is ok to use this supply |

I guess the overhead control panel would be closer and easier to feed wires from. Is it a 164 car? That one at least has both switched an permanent power at the overhead control panel. I assume this device would not draw a lot of current, then it should be OK.
