I'm not sure the immobiliser is built in to the engine ECU at that age of car. Could be part of the aftermarket dealer fit alarm system which will normally disable a couple of engine related relays. The alarm control unit is normally hidden behind the dashboard. A good auto electrician or alarm company should be able to permanently disarm or replace it for you.

I can give you a number to my mate who is an ECU specialist, I'm sure he will answer all your questions, unless you have sorted it.

It a scorpion alarm. They ran out of business a long time ago. Try fiddling with the connections(two) to the black box. You will find it if you remove the panel underneath the steering wheel secured with tie cable. Failing that take it to a car alarm/radio dealer to have it removed. It a lottery having one of these box that why I have a backup car in case. If you disturb the battery negative, that what happened.

In the C class its often behind the dashboard as Dragon says but I seem to remember that in some models the control unit was moved to the front floor area so may well be where you say. Sorry I can't be more specific. You will just have to search for it. The alarm system has nothing to do with the engine ECU except to supply/interrupt the 12v power to it.
