You have a bulb failed or about to fail.
If the warning light only comes on with headlights then that is where you need to look but you can check by turning lights on in turn (sidelights, headlights, brake lights etc) and see when the warning light comes on. My best guess would be a rear tail light cluster has a blown bulb or a loose connection somewhere.

Did you check the number plate lights as well?
These are known to fail when their wires break through fatigue after years of opening and closing the boot lid. |
