211 - Auto open and close of windows from key fob

To 211 owners; when I bought my 211 I couldn't get the key fob to open or close all the windows and sunroof. I just presumed it hadn't been coded or something and forgot all about it

The other day I tried and lo and behold it worked.

But then I tried again yesterday and back to how it was. No joy.

Any ideas as to why this might be?

you need to be quite close to the door handle/car

As above you have to be almost directly at the dside of the drivers door pointing your key at it.

Press lock and then keep you finger on it.

for 7 yrs we didn't even know we had this feature. Handy when the kids leave the window down.

Am I also correct in thinking if I leave my sunroof open and it rains it shuts?...

As above x2. Bizarrely, it's an infrared link from the end of the key to the little rectangle on the driver's door handle. Silly really: should be RF like Ford use. I could open or close my old Mondeo's glass from any angle without line of sight from a distance of more than 10 yards.

I find it's handy when it's really hot. I can open the whole car up and let it cool down.

That's a nice idea. I'd appreciate it if you were to test that feature first.

Look at the end of the key on a digital camera / phone camera screen live view. Their sensors can see near-infrared: if it lights up white when you press the button, it's not the key that's at fault.

My understanding is that it's a safety thing. i.e. you need to be looking at the car and observing the closure. In the event of a child's arm getting trapped or something, you'd see it and be able to release your finger from the button (i.e. stop the closure.)

If it was a one press RF, you'd simply walk away and not notice that little Jonny's hand was trapped in the window!!

I think this is a feature that can be enabled with a STAR machine (by someone who really know how to use it properly). I'm sure I've seen on some MB forums in the States where people with 211s say they've had this enabled.

Whilst driving with the roof open, if rain is detected it will shut the roof.

Anyone confirm if they've got this on their car? Pretty sure it doesn't do it on my 211.

What a great tip - I'll try that.

Mine works intermittently too. I think you may need a fully charged battery as it's possibly linked to the convenience functions.

Hi Harry, are you referring to the main battery - ie the one in the boot and not the smaller one in the engine bay?

The one in this boot is relatively new and I haven't been seeing "convenience features disabled" messages if that's what you mean.

Or are you suggesting that the window open/close function might cut out if the charge is a little low even if the error message isn't appearing?

I have the same problem with my W203.

Only had it a couple of months and it only had one key when I bought it. Anyway I tried it just after getting the car......no joy! Then the remote locking started being hid and miss so I replaced the batteries in the key fob, which cured the remote locking problems and more out of curiosity than anything I tried holding down the lock button to see if the windows closed too..... success......it worked.......once!
I have since bought a second key from the dealers and that doesn't operate the windows close/open function either.
So I'll be watching this thread with interest to see what suggestions and fixes members post.

I can't help much I'm afraid. I've just came to that conclusion because if I've been on a bit of a run it works fine but if the cars been sitting in the drive for a few days it doesn't. It may well be something else, hopefully someone with greater knowledge than I will reveal all

Well, oddly enough, when it did work after it was after a one hour drive.

And then when I tested it again it had been sitting on the drive for a couple of days.

Hmmmm...not sure when I'm going to use if for any distance next.....
