2002 W203 Melted Wing Mirror Glass

The glass on my drivers side wing mirror looks like it has melted from behind and after a phone call to my local Mercedes indie i've been quoted £300 to fix it (he says it's an auto dimming mirror). When I asked him about just replacing the glass with a regular plain one he said it might not be possible, is this true or can I just buy a regular mirror to replace it with? I'm not all that bothered about it being auto dimming or not I just want to be able to see that's all.

Thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to help.

Take care the fluid 'melting' from the glass doesn't contact the paintwork (or yourself!).

You could obtain a plain mirror glass from ebay.de (as passenger door mirrors don't dim). You may even be lucky and get a driver's mirror on ebay.uk

Halfords use to have stick-on glass pre-cut to different make and models for around a tenner iirc. Said that, you'll need to find what's wrong with the heater first, or it will melt the new mirror and eventually the housing...

EDIT:

Search for "Halfords Blind Spot Replacement Mirror Glass BS575 "

When I say melted the glass hasn't actually melted, it looks like the silver at the back of the mirror has melted and run slightly enough to obscure the view.

The right mirror glass sold on eBay at the weekend for £12.50 + £2.99 P&P.

Retail they're £330 IIRC, but secondhand on eBay £50-80

If I never used the heated mirrors a regular one would do wouldn't it?

Get a heated glass from Euro car parts for about 40 quid.

All sorted now. After a phone call to Stuttgart Mercedes in Pontypridd (who my dad swears by) they're fitting a new one on Friday for only £50 Hopefully they'll be able to take a look at my passenger mirror the same time which this morning decided to stop retracting

Thanks to everyone for their help and advice, much appreciated.
