Wiring Problem

I am considering installing one of the small illuminated Christmas trees in the centre of the dashboard on my SL (R230 Model)

The Tree comes with a length of wire and a plug which goes into the cigarette lighter socket. I do not wish to have a length of wire draped over the console, and further more one can't shut the ashtray with a plug in position.

Have any members here any experience of Hard wiring a Christmas Tree into the wiring loom? Also is it better to wire it to the lighting circuit so it only lights up when it is dark ?

Hi Tony,

the only comment I'd make is do you really want to hard wire something into your car that you'll only have on display for about 2 weeks in a year ?

Just a thought.

Jonathon.

If you must do it - unless you've already bought your wired one - why not get a battery one then just bluetak it to your dash?

Tacky !!! May I point out that it certainly won't be from the Pound shop. It will be quite a stylish tree, with Blue lights to match my illuminated door sills.

Tacky!

You could run a cable to the fusebox where you will find safely fused 12v. Dunno which labelled feature I'd consider fusing it through though!

Take your ashtray out, and splice the wires with the 12V and the earth for the LED in your ashtray (which I also think is the power for the cigarette lighter). Then the tree will only illuminate when you've got your side/main beams on. Cool effect.

Edit: Then put the ashtray back ofcourse.

i'd just stuff the wires around the cig lighter connectors or maybe the radio ignition wire.... i wouldnt cut the wires for just a few weeks of use.

Have you considered going NUCLEAR! I hear that you can pick up a cheap ex soviet submarine reactor at the weekend car boot sale in Omsk at this time of year. You would have to wear a lead jockstrap of course in the car and line the doors with boron impregnated concrete. Its a small price to pay for limitless power. No more pp9s from Tesco for you. Come to think of it after a while the whole car should glow in the dark not just the Christmas tree. Kool!!!
