undertray/Engine cover on a E300TD

Just wondering how usefull the under trays/ engine cover under the car are? I have none
Just realised this last weekend when I changed the engine mount.
Are they necessary?
Cheers.

They stop the oil landing on your driveway.

Plus point for not having undertrays on a W210 is that you can see the rust on the subframe more easily.

its a bit rusty indeed there... I can see
Just wondering if they'll improve the milieage? Or the noise? Or anything?
But as you mentionned, easier to work under the car without

I have a steel sump guard, which is worth it's weight in gold considering the amount of grounding when the front springs were broken.

I'd not worry too much, may possibly keep the engine cleaner.

They are really heavy, like ship plate...

Easy enough to lift when removing.

Robot cop? Citroen CX use to have those as options too.
I'm not interested on adding too much weight though .

Apart from the protective function of a steel sump guard, plastic undertrays do some road-noise suppression and smooth the passage of air under the car, thereby contributing a bit to fuel economy. I wish I could find one for my W126, but they are no longer available from MB, and the breakers rarely see them because so many people seem to have dicarded them (too much fiddle to refit, presumably).
