I've just installed a new Kenwood CD player in my 2000 ML320, problem is the sound is too high, even on the lowest level its too loud when having a conversation. Does anyone know what the problem is? Does this car normally come with an in built amp thats boosting power? Halfords guy has suggested I can get some special cabling/connectors that might solve this

If its got a amp in the car, you must be VERY careful as you my end up blowing the input stage on the amp, as the input voltage is too high. Try to call a mercedes dealership and give them you chassis number and ask them to see if it had a amp or not.

If its got an amp you will either need a speaker to line converter or use RCA's instead.

Did the old unit have "BOSE" on the tape door if so this will have an internal amp under the dash board, & if so it will need to be removed or an adaptor cable fitted, Blaupunkt part number is 7607001069 costs around £35.99 from all good Blaupunkt dealers.
