Can somebody please tell me the speaker sizes for a SLK ( I don't have one yet).

I have a set of JL Audio XR speakers and would like to know if the are going to fit?

Thanks

James

Here's the sizes if it comes with Bose - sorry, don't know about the standard speakers:

tweeters - 4 cm
mids - 13.5 cm
subs - 16.5 cm

Hmmm.....my last SLK didn't have Bose, and the speaker in the front doors were (I think) 6.5"/16.5cm. I fitted some MBQuartz speakers/tweeters, and it was a hell of a job. Some of the forums will lead you to beleive that these are the same size as the OEM speakers, but they're not! The tweeters also needed a lot of trimming with a Dremmel before they'd fit properly. I also never managed to get rid of an annoying rattle after fitting, though to be fiar that might have been there before I bodged the speaker job.

Where did you get your system fitted?

That was part of the problem - I did it, on the basis that various forums said it was just a straight swap-out for the OEMs - not true! The door cards are reasonably easy to get off if you need to, just 3 (big) screws - one under the airbag sign, and 2 under the handgrip (there maybe another one, but they're easy enough to find). Getting the handgrip apart is a bit scary, and you need to be careful not to mark the plastic.

Hi Pete,

thanks for the pointers in the same situiation again would you do it youself or get a professional to do it for you?

I have a bit of experience have replaced the speakers in my last two cars so don't know if I should go for it.

Guess will have to wait for the car and have a look.

Does your car ( non- Bose ) only have the 6.5" speakers or are these the only ones you changed?

mmmm - this thread is interesting. I swapped my head unit out a while ago now and have been thinking about new speakers and perhaps an amp. BUT maintaining that showroom finish to the interior of the car is really important to me. Had I set the spec it would have had Bose and I'm surprised with it's other stuff that they didn't put Bose in - but there ya go!

As a consequence, I have just the four speakers, two in each door - tweeters up on the handle trim and then the main speakers in the lower door panel. I have to say this is something there is no way I would do myself so hat's off to those of you that do - but I can see me staying with what I've got for quite a while  never mind - set the bass on the head unit well and the door mirrors shake anyway  :D

I'd get a pro to do it next time, or at least someone with experience in fitting speakers into an SLK. I've fitted speakers before in other cars, and, again, if pattern-matched speakers were available for the SLK, then it would be relatively easy, but I think I got the closest fit, and they still required a fair bit of tweaking to fit them into the existing speaker mounts (for the main units), and a lot of tweaking for the tweaters.

I think if I'd known what I was getting into, then maybe I would have taken more time initially, and done a better job over all. I'm sure most experience fitters wouldn't have much of a problem getting the job done in a couple of hours; I hate to think how much time I soaked up in the end trying to get it just right.

Like Pammy, I wanted to keep the SLK's looks 'normal', so when I'd finally finished, you wouldn't know that the speakers were different. I did also replace the headunit at the same time with a Pioneer satnav unit, so I've never really worked out whether the speakers or the HU made the final difference to the sound, but I have to say, having owned 2 SLKs (the first with Bose, the second without), there really is a big difference in quality; if I was buying another SLK, I wouldn't get one without Bose, or, if I did, I'd get the sound upgraded pretty quick. It was the first option I added to my current CLK, after the obligatory leather. There's nothing to beat having the roof down and Katrina and the Waves  blaring out the speakers....I'm walking on sunshine..... :bannana:

I'll stop now.

Pattern matched speakers - Thay are not the annoying curved triangle shaped ones are they?

Nope, just normal round ones that fit into the existing MB speaker holder.

Ok not wanting to appear that I keep asking questions but I have another I am afraid.

It is difficult trying to plan an installation without the car to fit it in but want to get everything ready before hand.

If I want to install an amplifer is there room to do it without making irreversible changes to the interior of the car / boot?

Hi there all, my first post on this forum! I have a '98 SLKwith Non-Bose system.
I have replaced the head unit as the CD laser was shagged and now wish to upgrade door speakers, add an amp and rear speakers.

First question is:-
in Bose equipped SLK's where are the rear speakers positioned amd what size are they? I haven't attempted to remove the trim behind the seats to see what if any cut outs exist.
Second:- I have seen on Car Audio Direct website that they sell an adaptor for replacement of factory speakers for 17cm aftermarket fit, but it states that they are for rear side panels! I want to replace the door speakers with something a bit more "BUTCH" but do not want to hack the doors about. Having looked at the speakers as fitted by MB i notice they have three screw mounting holes similar to the items for sale by CAD and wondered if they would fit in the doors!

Anyway, anyone got any info/knowledge of doing SLK speaker install upgrades?
Ps its going to sunny tomorrow hmmmm roof down... lol

Ive got a CLK, and im a perfectionist when it come to music, I've spend in excess of 5k on my car audio system. As a result I tend to change my speakers quite often, almost once every 2 months or so. I do all myself, as I know what goes on in so called 'pro install shops', I wouldnt let anyone touch my car. Well with the exception of a few, SQ Plus for example.

Back to speakers, its relativly easy, would take me around an hour change them, and hot glue the tweeters into place behind the wing mirrors. Only time when things get a little more difficult is when you want to add amps, which means trailing wires from front to back, and also with most top-end speaker systems a crossover is used (normally one for left and one for right). As my speakers are amped I put my crossovers under the front seats and velcro them in place.

Its easy enough to do with no technical knowlege. If someone wants a hand or some advice drop me a pm
Ill be taking my whole system out next weekend which should be fun, lets hope its sunny
