Hi

I was driving my Brothers W124 E220 today when the indicators decided that they would become intermitent.

Some times when you select left or right nothing at all happens, the Hazard warning lights dont work either, also sometimes they start off working then suddenly stop.

I have checked the other functions on the control stalk and they all work fine.

Any ideas??

Regards

thatll be the relay playing up. I think the relay is situated somewhere in the footwell area, maybe up near the stalk. When it works, youll hear the clicky noise, trace that and youll find the relay...
On my 123 the relay is part of the hazard switch, but i think that changed in the 80's sometime.

Any ideas on what the cost of one of these relays is?

It sounds silly, but have you tried messing with the hazard switch? IIRC Ian B Walker told me that if the switch is in the wrong position or it's not been released/depressed enough it causes the exact gremlins you describe! Press the hazard button in and out a few times and see if that helps before you buy anything!

i got mine free from droonsfields, not sure about yours. But it may well start working with a persuasive tap, they often just get stuck...

I took my car in for an MoT and I failed because of the indicators not working. I brought the car home and decided to check out what was wrong. I discovered that if the 4 way flasher switch isnt pressed firmly home in the Normal mode, i.e. indicators only, non of the indicators worked. I resolved the problem by pressing the 4 way switch fimly down and pointing the examiners to what they had neglected to do. It seems that on some W124's there is a false home position on the switch. Hope that this helps.

Ian

When you say the 4 way flasher switch, what do you mean?

The big red rocker switch on the dash. The one that activates the 4 way flashers.

Ah! I will go and check that, cheers. Failing that I will try and hunt down the home of the relay

Ok..i give up, anyone know where the relay is??? I can hear the relay ticking but cant isolate exactly were its coming from.

Good job i am not in bomb disposal!
