Hi
I have just purchased 2 Mercs.
W211 2005 E270
W221 2006 S320
Both seem to have the older COMAND (ie they do not show ETA)
I think for the W211 I may need service cd W211 589 13 22 00
Please could someone confirm this and also tell me where I can get this. If someone could email me the files to burn to PC I'd happily pay them by paypal. Or if too big to email, I could give ftp login to my spare server space to upload.
As for the W221 I have no idea on this, I also want to get working newer maps (my pal gave me 2008 maps but dvd does not recognise) for this but have no idea where to start. I don't even know if this vehicle has a seperate vagigation dvd unit. I think I read that it uses the normal 6 dvd changer in the dash and simply load maps to hard drive.
Any pointers would be gratefully received.
Many thanks
Terry

So you have bought an E270 CDI and an S320CDI?
The W211 Comand service CD part number should be correct. The W221 Comand update needs to be done with SDS (as far as I know, I have it done for my car).
Yes, on the W221 you load the map data from a DVD to the hard disc. The front DVD drive or changer is used for that. I believe the latest map DVD is not recognised before you have the Comand SW updated.

Once you get the cd for the W211 dont forget to:
Turn ignition on
Ensure there is no disc in the head unit drive
To start software update press 1, 3 and 8 at the same time
Insert CD
After it is completed turn off ignition and lock car. Wait until instrument cluster turns off.
That is the official version of eventshttp://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif

I have not seen a service CD/DVD for the W221, just the SDS option. The disk where it would load the SW is not "self contained" like the W211 service disk, as far as I know. Dealer experts on the forum should know more.

Hi there,
I would appreciate if someone can tell when the update of the Headunit on the W211 is made is that going to errase all past information, such as milage, service date, or any other issue in the unit.
I have got the new Nav DVD but wan't works, I think it needs the comand update.
Thanks for advice.

We are talking about the Comand update? Comand does not have any mileage or service dates stored. Those should be instrument cluster items (but should remain unmodified through a proper IC update when needed).
At least I had all the info like previous destinations, address book etc. maintained through the Comand update.

All what I need now is to get update software somewhere since my dealer wan't do it for me...
But only last question. Is there any risk to do the update by its own? if yes what risk.
Kind regards

I don't understand why your dealer would not do it, or is that they won't do it for free?
In any case, theoretically there always is a risk when updating SW for what ever device, the memory circuit could fail etc. In practise if you just can get hold of the correct SW CD (new/good condition) and follow the instructions accurately, nothing would go wrong.

I don’t think it is question of money, because he did not even talk about that. My dealer pretended that the car conditions are ok as is now (under guarantee).. Therefore he thinks it is not worth it / necessary to take the RISK and update. I am not sure he understood the subject.
However, how can I get hold of a correct SW CD (new/good condition) and where?
thanks again for advice.
Cheers

Have you asked your MB parts guy if he would sell the disc? Not all dealers may sell it because it is a "service tool" and MB has given instructions that tools should only be sold to MB workshops. Someone was asking radio removal tools from my parts guy but he refused to sell them, just referred to MB instructions on "W"-parts.
You should find the correct part number from some previous posts on the forum.

CheersAre you talking about a Mercedes-Benz main dealer? What country are you from? I'm only asking because I thought that UK dealerships had to have qualified technicians that knew what they were on about? The disc I purchased for our 211 was the same one as described by the author of this thread.
I think for the W211 I may need service cd W211 589 13 22 00
I forget the price I paid but it was only about £10 ish

Hi John and thanks for your post. In fact I am in France and my dealer appeared not be too HOT for going the way to updating my Comand. If I did say some thing about him, that is because he did not give other explanation than that I gave above.
Anyway I think I should consult other dealers in order to get a copy of the CD, specially at the price you gave in your post, is not really an issue.

We are extremely fortunate in having at least two very knowledgeable folks regarding this issue. I would do a search for either 'Richard' or 'Alfie' and then perhaps send them a pm for advice.
The part number we listed is the upgrade that gives the permanent 'ETA' on the front screen of older 211's (like mine :)) There are however other upgrades that your car might not have had. but your dealer should know this.
When I installed the upgrade we are discussing it never interfered with any critical settings, but it will stop you from accessing the Engineer's Menu. (Good idea)
If you have ANY further problems please feel free to shout.
Incidentally how well does TMC work on your car please?
Finally I hope you are having nicer weather than us at the moment :)
Regards
John

Thanks John for your advices which are all positive. Although I am not writing that much but I keep reading/following the posts progress to saty informed and because I do appreciate the active people in this forum, in term of helps and assistance.
The TMC works fine most of the time, as far as I can notice. The positions of the traffic jumps symbols are not too accurate but understandable and very helpfull.
Regarding the weather, it is not that great unfortunately and I am happy to program my vacation during August (one week). I wish you a better one than ours anyway those days.

Now I'm lost (again), you say you are from France but you are using TMC? My understanding is that TMC for France was introduced along with the latest Comand SW 30/06 (is this the latest?). I understand TMC changed from free to encrypted in France some time ago? While TMC was available e.g. for UK already before the ETA display was introduced, TMC support for France should have appeared only with the "ETA SW update".
If you happened to have the latest Comand SW already, I could understand why the dealer did not want to perform any SW update (but they could have explained that in a polite way). Isn't there still the option to check the Comand SW status even if the engineering menu is gone? I don't have a W211 Comand but those who have could help giving a reference.

Hi Diesel Benz,
I confirm with my Nav. DVD rev_7 I having the TMC working perefectly, but the new ver-8 would not. I don't have actually the ETA display and I still can access the Eng. menu.
My dealer is quite nice and very amicable, but I don't understand his position and I didn't want to contridct him.
I don't know what I can say more, but if needed I'll do with pleasure giving any further information.

OK, I have to go back reading a bit. First of all, I thought TMC for France needed the same Comand SW update as the one bringing the ETA display but I must be mistaken (I'm not really familiar at all with the W211 Comand). I guess you have checked your Comand display settings and did not find any option to show GEO-coordinates versus ETA etc?
I've forgotten what has been said on this thread so far but do I understand right that you were not able to load the V8.0 disk, or at least did not get navigation working while it still works fine if you put the older V7.1 disk in?
I thought V8 would load in any case (doesn't this MAP disk include the Navi processor update too, in case that is needed?). I assume the car has been switched off to allow all devices go to sleep after any updates, to enable a clean start.
Considering the SW versions, I thought the W211 Comand would still allow reading the SW version even if the engineering menu control features were disabled. I thought you were referring to the engineering menu in this mode, but is it actually so that it isn't even possible to read the different status info after the latest update? Perhaps this is different for Comand 2.0 or 2.5.
At the moment I cannot figure out anything else than "better wait for comments from experts". In any case, when you inserted the V8.0 disk (part number A211 827 15 65), I would suggest you to wait until it stops working with any possible updates, once the normal display appears, switch off ignition, lock the car and wait till the cluster shuts off, at least 6 minutes and try again.

I'll let you know of any progress.
