I've got a serial cable for my connection between a Garmin Emap and a Compaq Evo n410. I've used it on various other laptops, and also have a cable connection to a Psion 5MX as well.

I got mine via the web from a company called Exportech who were really helpfull.

A USB GPS receiver?

Plenty available on a web search.

Here's a good site....

http://www.cartft.com/shop/catalog/gl/6

Lots of USB, serial and bluetooth receivers.

I like the idea of bluetooth, allows you to put the GPS anywhere in your car.

You can pick up a USB GPS mouse on ebay for as litle as £25 new.

Use Mappoint combined with AGPS or Infomap Navigator to get full voice navigation.

I've been down this route so if you want to 'pick me brains', feel free :)
