Silent Alarm?

Hi all,

Sometimes the alarm on my car is going off, but without the horn sounding first, just the warning lights - does anyone know what might cause this?

If i set the alarm and unlock/open the passenger door the alarm horn sounds fine, so I know that it al least works...

But I have new batteries in it, seriously, only put them in a week ago...

By the way, by warning lights I meant the indicators...

While I'm at it, the reason I changed the batteries is because I could only unlock the car when standing right next to it, but after putting in new batteries I can still only unlock from really close to the car - is there any way to extend the range of the keyfob at all? (Bar getting a brand new one)
