My New Wheels ! [Archive]

I picked up my newly refurbished wheels from Lepsoms today, - very impressed with the result, So now I effectively have brand new Mille Miglia rims, with as new 245/45/17 P-zero tyres, and brand new stealership wheel bolts and locking bolts all for just over £600!

I was just looking at Your SL Web Site (http://www.216turbo.com/SL.htm) and the difference of the car from when you first got it, is unbeleavable and too think that a set of nice wheels and the clear indicator lenses has all thats been changed(well maybe alot of TLC too)LOL .

It would have been nice to have 18's on it - but I really do like these particular rims and the cheaper 17" tyres are just a bonus !

I've got to add - the car has had nothing but the wheels and indicators - the new pics were taken at a much better location with more light, the yard outside the firm - If anything it was cleaner in the first (original) pics

I'm checking out the centre caps - but they might be a bit too much with the chrome as my wheels have a bright but painted finish

After just 1 working day with the car with the new wheels on - She doesnt like the reduced ride quality induced by the lower profile tyres <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'>

I have been informed by she who must be obeyed that the new wheels are "not up to standard" and have completely destroyed the "magic carpet" ride that she was used to.

I'm going to check the tyre pressures tomorrow, - maybe a slightly lower pressure will allow me to keep the wheels on the car. Unfortunately she has to drive it to work every day and I just couldnt take the grief if I cant improve it.

I think it handles much better than before!, looks better than before - *and although there isnt much difference in ride quality - you can actually feel the difference !

You cannot go back!

I can imagine the ride quality difference - Koolvin also commented the difference when he went back to his 15's whilst the 17's where being refurbed.

Maybe in time your wife will like the new road holding characteristics and will not notice the ride so much. Does she not agree it looks sooooooooo much better?

Tweak the suspension a bit, i have driven SL's with 18's on after driving oneswith 16's on, and to be honest the ride didnt deteriorate THAT much.

A c-class is a different matter, when changes wheels the difference is drastic!!

When we went from the standard 18's on my dads car upto 20's we only noticed a very small difference, then we set the hydro's to have more unsprung mass and it bought it back to almost factory...

More tyre is always gonna mean a smoother ride, but with that you loose handling advantages, most of the time traction and also those important looks.

This is exactly why not everyone upgrades their wheels, some people dont need the extra grip or traction, and dont want to stand out with new wheels.

Oh well, you have to take the rough with the smooth (bad pun&#33<img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>

A quick update

The SL still has the new wheels on it!

I offered to sell the car and give her a Rover or CRX to drive - both nice cars but theres nothing quite like an SL for car park bragging rights when shes at at work.

She has decided that the ride isnt quite so bad after all as I'd let 4psi out of the tyres all round, and she has forgotten what it used to ride like!
