I am about to purchase a second hand Star Diagnostics System
it has the following set of cables,OBDII cable, 38pin cable, 4 pin cable and, Vito/Sprinter cable
The seller says:
"The unit uses DAS Aug/2007 (english) software. It can be updated with the dealer DAS DVD
This system works well and has had very little use"
I would very much appreicate if anyone can tell me what checks can I do, to check the machine is 100% legit and working.....
I think this is a Compact 2 system..and I don't know how it compares to a Compact 3.
I have attached pictures

First ask for the price (I'm guessing you already did). That is one good way to check it is legit (not sure how you define legit, I thought it was officially not allowed to sell these devices further, the same with the SW that is included). What reads in the multiplexer stickers (looks ok though)?

Plug it into the updating service and see what it says.
I understood that these are hired and never sold

They are occasionally nicked though....

The compact 2 has less functions than the 3.
I can't remember what exactly but I think it is some coding that it can't do.
If it is available to buy as a genuine item not from MB themselves I would suspect the source of supply!

Well I'm going to view it in a couple of days....
So I just needed to do some quick checks while I'm there...the only thing I was going to do was plug it into my W211 and see if it connects...I'm thinking now looking at the sophistication of this system...this test is bit primitive.
Also is this the Compact 2 or 3 machine ?

It looks like a basic.
Connect to the EIS (ignition switch) and have a play with the coding but remember to switch it back to original.
If you don't buy I I maybe interested. How much do they want for it?

If you can hold on for a short while, I know of a genuine sourced one which will be for sale very soon ;)
We have just bought (yes bought outright) a brand new one from Mercedes:bannana: The only thing you have to pay for are the monthly updates at circa £110 per month.

Cant you do just one update at the end of the year, and get them all at once for £110

Nope. When you buy the system you enter into an agreement to take the updates for three years! Besides, they have bug fixes and support for new models etc.

Thats a very good machine for diagnostics but with things like SCN coding now a connection to MB is needed for a lot of add's

Maybe I will buy one at that price, I can use it in my local garage and that would soon pay for itself, plus I would learn a little more

Malcolm dont say that, i have just paid £2000 for one!
There were 2 firms with them, one was cheap and the other about £1500, they said that the other one was coming in through the back door from Asia but people were buying there and then and going out with them, the trade show will be near you in Feb I think
I will dig out all of the details shortly

W204 for one thing;)

The item in the image is a Basic 1 and all machines do the same coding. Just some are getting old and slow now.
W204 for one thing;)
Are you sure about that ?

The reason why they call it a LAUNCH is that once it ceases to be a noun it becomes a verb.

Do these just pop into your head or do you have to think about them?
No sarcasm intended

What if you spent most of your time your head downwards? I've tried it only once but you must see the results already.

I've posted in the other forum - but the most important part of my post was that picture of the "Star Basic" has appeared in loads of eBay auctions. Note also how the floors are different in the 2 pictures - normally as auctions based in Scotland where the auctions had hidden bidder ids (but now all have hidden bidder ids)
My guess is its another faker after your money.
