i have just purcahsed a Nokia N95 8G phone and would like to connect it direct to my pre installed car system. My current phone and cradle works well.
MB do not currently do a cradle for the N95 phone, and I understand it will also not connect to the blue tooth cradle option. Can anybody help.:)

How old is your W211, does it have UHI or the Nokia 6xxx series phone kit? If it has UHI, you can replace the cradle with a BT device. All three available can be used with N95 (BT HF and BT SAP, two versions of the latter).

My car is an E-Class 2005 plate. I currently run a Npkia 6230i phone. It sits in the arm rest as part of the factory installed sytem. I would like to keep the same set up and not have to put a seperate sytem bolted to the dashboard somewhere.
Woulld MB Bluetooth adapter function ok and support the N95 !!!

The BT adapter would replace the cradle for your 6230 in the arm rest. Not sure about if the MB BT adapter supports the N95, but Diesel Benz seems to think so.

It would certainly work for telephony but phonebook may be an issue, depending on the BT device too (version and HF versus SAP). Better search for posts from existing users.

Is the Bluetooth on the N95 SAP ?
Not all BT is. - even Nokias.

A duplicate SIM could always be used if worst came to worst.

As long as the car has a UHI system then you will be able to get the bluetooth puck, the more expensive one by the way and it will work perfectly with the N95.
The N95 supports bluetooth SAP so getting the more expensive puck will give you phonebook capabilities and uses the cars aerial etc, well worth having.
Forgot to mention that I use one of these in my ML with my N95 and it works perfectly.

Here it is cheaper

Also, of value with the SAP puck is it uses the car's aerial, so better reception and less battery usage on the phone itself
[edit, oops, Marcos said that already]

BTW, if you meant 3G, and you use the 3 network, then you can not use the Mercedes SAP cradle, you'll have to use the HFP cradle.
This is because the SAP cradle is the phone, it just borrows the SIM identity and phonebook from your mobile, and it only has GSM900/GSM1800Mhz in it.

N95 would support both options. You can select from the phone menus which option you would want to use. Actually most S60 phones allow this (but I tend to remember there was at least one exception, not sure).
I used to use the Nokia N616 car kit in the past, also the car kit supported both options. I wish MB would do that.

3G is fine as it will always just switch to 2G when in the car. I don't think you can get the N95 on the 3-Network.

The operators with GSM900/1800Mhz networks and 3G networks allow you to switch between. 3 doesnt have access to the GSM900/1800Mhz network - so can't fall back, so if you have a 3 subscription, it wont work.
I've always presumed that you could actually use any 3G phone on the 3 network even if 3 don't actually supply that model in one of their 'bundles'

I don't think 3 allow any phone on their network, only ones they approve, I may be wrong though.:o

3 would not have similar fall back to GSM as the other (dual mode) operators do but they do have the national roaming option for areas that are not covered by their UMTS network. 3 wants to avoid their subscribers roaming on other networks at areas where they do have coverage. This is why they only accept UMTS only or UMTS/GSM dual mode phones registering to their network.
Access to their network would not be limited to those models they sell. When I roam to UK, my phone would work fine in their network (although I prefer switching to GSM only, making my phone avoid 3). International roaming is different though from their own subscribers registering through O2 (isn't O2 their partner for national roaming on GSM?).
I'm not 100% sure but the way I see is that they accept any phone access their network as long as it indicates UMTS capability when attaching. This ensures that the phone would select their UMTS network when ever it is available. Technically they could perform IMEI checking against their phone data base, for those who use their own SIM card.
Anyone tried with an unlocked dual mode phone (when set to support both GSM and UMTS) on the UK 3 network (with a 3 SIM card)?
