Hello

Now that winter is here what are the best bulbs to give a better light. I read ages ago in autoexpress Philips Vision + are these still good or are there better ones now.

Thanks

Osram Night Breakers are now ahead in the game compared to Philips Vision +. The Osram Night Breakers offer 90% more light on the road and claim to give a 10% more whiter light. Idearly no replacement bulb will give a Xenon look without a HID kit however some bulbs like the Osram Night Breakers and the Philips Vision + do claim to give a whiter light.

Hi,

Did you end up buying new bulbs?

Just wondering how you got on, as i'm also looking to upgrade my standard CLK headlights bulbs.
I saw that Halfords have a buy 1 get one free offer on their own brand (award winning) High Performance Headlight bulbs - which is good when they are £18 ea!

Hello,

No I have not decided yet which are best, auto express did a good test last year but obvioulsy things have moved on.

I guess the halfrauds deal is ok but I wonder if 'branded' buld would actually be any better?? who's to know?

I will post what I do as soon as I do it....

Cheers

Do not be fooled by the blue-ish Xenon look bulbs. They might look the part but some have crappy light output.

In the Auto Express bulb tests they assign a numeric "beam rating" which is a guide to light output. .

The best of the "blue" horrors can manage 82. The best of the "standard" bulbs gives 75. The Halfords Super Brilliance weighs in at 107. I have them in my Land Cruiser and they are pretty good

But this is what ye need:

Beam rating is 146.

Those Halfords ones have prooved to be best in the 50% + range however for the same price off the net you could get the Osram Nightbreakers 90%+ or the Philips Extreme Power 80%+. Theres some good reviews about both bulbs however the Osram Nightbreaker seems to be in the leed. I got the below pictures of another forum:

Osram Nightbreaker (left) vs. X-Treme Power (right) -- Low
Beam

In low beam they both look neck and neck !

Osram Nightbreaker (left) vs. X-Treme Power (right) -- High
Beam

Its in the high beam that the Osram Nightbreakers seem to take the leed.

Have the Halfords BOGOF bulbs on my E320CDI [pre-xenon] - very impressed and much brighter. Put them in at the beginning of the year.

I quite like those phillips ones but how does it work?
You buy them and then pay a garage to fit them in for you?
Is there a chance to blow fuse or screw up somehow?

Theres no need to pay someone in a garage at all, your manual should tell you how to replace them, there not too hard at all. Provided the car is off and the lights are off when replacing them, dont see why a fuse could blow :D

CLK (W208) like the W202 can be a Knightmare to remove the bulbs as the airbox gets in the way.

Have a go at it, its one of the easist DIY jobs you can do - make sure you do it midday though, when you can see around the airbox.

Are those 90% ones legal?
