W210 Clock

The digi clock/gear indicator at the bottom of the rev counter on my 2001 W210 E320 Cdi Avantgarde Estate is missing many of its pixels and they seem to come and go when they feel like it. More annoying than crucial.

How easy is it to get this fixed, does it require a complete new rev counter or can the clock section itself be replaced? Competent DIY job or technician?

The silicon ribbon cable in the back of the unit isn't making good contact.
There is a repair procedure which involves clamping the circuit board tighter with rubber packing inthe clamps. A rubber band works for this.
