A friends LHD A-class needed new batteries in the keyfob - however it doesn't appear to want to work. Is there a reset / resync procedure for the remote? She doesn't have the owners manual - I know there was a procedure on R129s for this.
There may be something wrong with the central locking of course but trying the basics first.

First check the key looks like it's working and giving an LED flash when you hit the buttons.
To resync - direct the key at the remote in the car and hit either lock or unlock then within 30 seconds turn the key in the lock to position II.

That won't work on an A-class. The alarm/immob system is different.
If the key fob is not working I suspect the key is faulty

After a change of batteries I tried locking of the car within 30s a number of times but this had no effect - however starting the car and operating the alarm buttons with the key in the ignition thinking they may talk to each other appears to have worked.
Coincidence possibly?

I replaced batteries in my wife's A class fob (A190L 2001 model) with no issues, worked first time with any need to reset even though possibly had dead batteries for some time as we only just got the car and fob didn't work.

Well, on my A Class ´04 I had dead batteries in my spare key and after changing the batteries I needed to re-sync the key with the car, after I did that everything worked flawlessly with that key.
I think the information about the re-sync procedure can be found in the original manual, but it was something like turning the key in the ignition etc.
Hope that helps!
