Have recently purchased a 1994 E280 Estate. The rear interior lights in the back and the boot work but when the switch is set to 'on when a door or tailgate is open' the lights are on all the time. The little switch/buttons that are pressed when the back doors shut seem to be present and correct but I don't know how the car knows if the tailgate is shut or open. The electric tailgate closer doesn't work so maybe this is related? Any ideas? Many thanks.

I imagine theres a micro switch on the tailgate closer unit which tells the courtesy light circuit that the rear door is shut. If the closer is not working then the courtesy light circuit "thinks" the rear door is still open and the light stays on. you need to identify the wires to the micro switch or replace/repair the closer unit.

The loom that goes through the apature of the boot lid may have a break in the wire(s). So the little switch that tells the boot lid that its open may not be working due to a break in the loom.
A continuity test will find your problem probably
