Rear Defroster Switch Flashing?

Hi!

This morning when I went to switch on the electronic rear defroster in my '93 190e 2.6, the indicator / switch began to flash on and off as opposed to a steady on that I am accustom to seeing. It also appeared that the defroster was not working as it should. Does anyone know what this flashing indicator is trying to tell me? Any feedback would be appreciated!

I'm pretty sure that the blinking means that the defroster has been deactivated. I guess there could be different reasons, but a battery that is getting low might be a possible explanation?
