Why is it that the key fob has to be pointing directly at the drivers side door in order to operate the roof from outside? Surely it would make sense to be able to control it from any angle and from a reasonable distance away. I'd really like to be able to put the roof down whilst I'm still in the house to let the heat out before I get in it.
Is this possible via some sort of electronics 'modification'?

Presumably it's infra-red rather than radio.

You can probably get an IR repeater and position it on a post aligned parrallel to your car at the edge of your drive! Then again maybe not.

Brabus used to supply a remote control for the SLK roof, I wonder if they have something similar for the CLK.
Here's one for the SLK at formymercedes.com (http://www.formymercedes.com/mb_results.asp?model=R170&class=slk-class&category=Remote+Control+for+Vario+Roof).

Ah it operates by infra-red. Well that is disappointing. Oh well. I'll live
