The outside temperature gauge on my 1989 SL has never worked since I bought the car.
I take it there is the gauge and a sender unit fitted somewhere, but where is the sender unit?
And when I do locate it what is the best way to check the sender unit and the gauge to see which item is defective.
Any help appreciated.

Thye sender will be behind the front number plate assuming it is fitted.

Thanks Dieselman,
I will have to look next week, as the car is on axle stands while the wheels are being refurbed, as luck would have it I parked with the front of the car against the garage wall, so cannot get access to the front bumper just now.
Thanks Wobbly

Have a look near the fog lamps. It is a very small protrusion, approx. 4mm dia. and sticks out approx. 10mm. Looks a little like a pencil point.
I've had a problem and it showed the outside temp. as 95 Deg C.!!
Quite warm.

Hi Jim
Thanks for the info, as soon as I can move the car, I will have a look, at least I now know what I should be looking for.
My gauge is reading -20C, and I thought it was spring

If the reading was from last week then it may not be faulty after all........

Ive got the wheels back on the car.
Time to look for the sender unit for the gauge. Looked all around the front bumper and fog light area for dont know exactly what to look for,but couldnt see anything that could be the sender.
Thought I would try and trace wiring, and then found a green and brown wire, tucked under the front bumper, no plug or insulation tape, just a cut wire.
Quick test of these wires with the mulimeter, and the gauge works.
So the sender has been removed, and not very professionally, so a trip to the dealers for a new sender unit and a lighter wallet should sort this,

Nice find and test.
The sender should be behind the front number plate.

Got the sender unit today.
Spoke to the guy at the dealership, who supplied a diagram about fitting it.
Fitted it in half a hour, and the gauge works fine.
Thanks for everyones help.
