W202 speedo irratic

The speedo has always been like this, even when I bought it, but gradually it's become worse.
It would normally only jump from 0-20mph when accelerating from a stop, now sometimes you don't get up to 50mph before it jumps from zero.

Why is it doing this? Someone said something to me about a sensor on the rear diff that may need a clean?

Any help much appreciated.

Can someone tell me where this is located.

Gearbox sounds more probable.
