You can use a comand from a g wagon but not advisable as you would have to change I think the gyro etc due to different mounting positions as someone told me a while ago....
Much better to get a proper unit
I presume you are getting a European Comand.
A203 827 5242 = Europe
A203 827 5342 = USA
A203 827 5442 = Japan
Hope this helps.

Well, I paid £1300 for a COMAND and a Mercedes OEM CD changer - this was the price which included all cables, looms, GPS antennae etc and installation instructions...
I got mine from Steve (www.mbenznl.com)
He was excellent and even helped me over the phone with the installation... and you do get a warrenty with it - unlike the german ebay units!!
I have seen some on ebay for about £1400 ish installed for you ... may be worth a look? This seems to carry a 12 month warranty.
Good luck
Steve

There's also this one, for the W209, same Comand 2.0 unit as the W203:

thanks, something to think about there. Seems a cheaper way is to buy the stuff yourself and fit for about £700 all in...is this realistic?

Maybe - you might be risking it buying from Germany though if the unit is duff - good luck though!!
I dont mind giving advice on fitting by phone etc... - or you can pop up !!

thatnks splang! We'll see - i'm kind of a safe not sorry guy so will likely fork out the 1k for a ebay fitter.
Although i'm still fighting the urge of a boxster....
