My windows are playing up. If I disconnect/reconnect the battery, this fixes them for a short while, hardly even a day then they stop working again, along with the electric door mirrors. I have learned that it seems there is a window control module for each window, it is part of teh motor/regulator assembly inthe back doors but separate inthe front doors. THese modules are all connected together as part of what is know as the CAN network (like a lan network for PC's but inthe car for connectiong all the control units together)
So...one dodgy control unit is knocking all the rest out and the disconnect/reconnect 'reboots' teh contol units till they get stuffed again. Anyone know how I can identify which control unit is causing the prob? e.g. the offside rear always works, could that be the 'faulty' control unit?

Can anyone confirm if what I say above is actually correct?

I realise your thread was posted a long time ago but did you get he problem sorted with the faulty windows and mirrors,i seem to have the same problem.

The OP had never posted again, I doubt he/she would be following the forum if there was no single reply at 2005 time, a pity.

Considering the description from the OP, it is true that door control units are using the CAN bus but my understanding is that a failure of one control unit typically should not make the whole bus dead. I cannot think of a reason why all windows stop working simultaneously, unless it actually was the lower control panel control module which is common to all windows.

I'm sure W202 experts are able to help.

By the way, you do not seem to have had too many problems with your car if you joined 2003 and had no need to post more than 12 posts so far. That's very good. :)

I think Olly has mentioned this. Unplug the rear door units and see.

I only have a problem with the front windows and mirrors. the passenger side always fails first, then the next day or more likely when the ignition is used again, the drivers side fails. If i unplug a unit what will it prove, its not going to work anyway? By the way i hav'nt had a door panel off yet so what am i looking for.

I'm sure Olly said the rear unit fails and stop the front ones working.

I'm sure this is correct when you say so. Do you know a technical explanation for this? I'm not at all familiar with this car and I did not even check if there was a control bus assigned for the window controls only or something like that.

I guess the rear windows should stop working if the rear control unit fails? If the issues do not start from the rear doors in this case, couldn't it be a broken wiring harness at the door, somewhere where the wires get bent frequently when the door is opened/closed?

Hi there

I am posting this for my husband who has a C200 1998 estate. For the past 6 months he has been having problems with his front windows. Some days they work and other days they don't. He has had a look at the control panel but cannot work out why they ar enot working. Yesterday we went on a long journey and when we started out his drivers door window was not working but my passenger one was and so were the back windows. This morning neither the driver's door or my passenger door windows would work. This is really getting to be a pain in the butt.
He is also finding that he has a problem with the fan. One minute it seems to blast out quite high and other times it is hardly going at all. My son seems to think it may be the resistor does this mean anything to anyone and has any one had a similar problem.
It would be really great to get the problems fixed as other than these the car is great.

Could be your windows motors are on the way out. When my car was around 10 years old I had to replace all the window regulators, not all at the same time but over a couple of years. The would play up just like yours, some times working, sometimes not.

It may be possible to fix them, I took one of my old rear motors apart after I had replaced it with a new one and got it going again however while it seems to be working ok detached from the car, I don’t know how reliable it would be, over time, if I were to have reinstalled it back into the car. So if himself is handy with a screwdriver he could have a go at that, otherwise I think its new motors required.

The fan speed controller is probably the regulator pack built onto the motor unit.

I see from your other post that the door mirrors are also involved in the fault so Dieselmans advice may be closer to the mark regarding the windows.
